The Journey

The European Route of Historic Gardens celebrates the art of garden design - living heritage combining horticulture, architecture, sculpture, and philosophy. European gardens reflect changing aesthetics from formal Renaissance designs to Romantic landscapes. The route includes Italian Renaissance gardens (Villa d'Este, Boboli), French formal gardens (Versailles, Vaux-le-Vicomte), English landscape parks (Stowe, Stourhead), Spanish Moorish gardens (Alhambra, Generalife), and botanical gardens. Gardens embody cultural values - control of nature, scientific collecting, aesthetic beauty, social display, and philosophical ideals. Many are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The route promotes garden conservation and horticultural heritage.
