The Journey

Romea Strata follows medieval pilgrimage and trade routes connecting Scandinavia and Northern Europe with Rome. For centuries, pilgrims, merchants, and travelers journeyed southward to visit the shrines of Saints Peter and Paul. The route passes through Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy, crossing the Alps and continuing through the Po Valley and central Italy to reach Rome. Along the way are Romanesque churches, medieval hospices, bridges, and towns that served pilgrims. Romea Strata connects with other major medieval routes including the Via Francigena. The route promotes slow travel, cultural heritage, and European connectivity.
