The Journey

Via Charlemagne explores the legacy of Charlemagne (742-814 CE), King of the Franks and first Holy Roman Emperor. His reign brought political unity, cultural revival (the Carolingian Renaissance), and educational reform to much of Western Europe. The route is centered on Aachen, Germany, where Charlemagne established his palace and chapel (now Aachen Cathedral). Other sites include Carolingian monasteries, palaces, and churches across France, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. The route explores Carolingian architecture, manuscript illumination, political organization, and the fusion of Roman, Germanic, and Christian elements that shaped medieval European civilization.
