About this work
Commissioned for the Spanish pavilion at the 1937 Paris International Exposition, Guernica was Picasso's direct response to the Fascist bombing of the Basque town of Guernica on 26 April 1937. The 11-foot-tall, 25-foot-wide canvas in black, white, and grey arrived at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1939 — where it remained until Spain's transition to democracy, when it was transferred to Madrid in 1981.
